MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino based in Italy who became a victim of identify theft on social networking site Facebook has come forward to clear his name. Louie Garcia’s name was a hot topic at the height of the controversial issue of felling of trees in SM Baguio City.

Dried mangoes, mango rind, and other Philippine sweets were featured in the recently-concluded "Kermes 2012" bazaar in Madrid for Spanish charity projects.

The bazaar, whose proceeds were donated to the Queen Sofia Foundation and other Spanish charities for women and children in need, was held at the Palacio Municipal de Congresos on April 14.

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, April 23 (PIA) -- Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from the province, working in Hongkong had their own celebration of the 17th Kalinga Day last April 15 that brought closer solidarity to the Kalinga OFW community there.

Provincial Board Member Gelacio Bongat, who was invited as guest speaker, reported there are at least 400 registered OFWs from Kalinga employed in various jobs in the host island state.

In his message, Bongat exhorted the OFWs as heroes of the province for their great contribution to the economy of Kalinga and the country through their regular remittances.

NEW YORK—Loida Nicolas Lewis, national chair of a Filipino-American good governance organization, has called on Filipinos to rally in front of China’s global embassies and consulates on May 11 to protest China’s aggressive encroachments on the Philippines’ Scarborough Shoal.

Among the first to respond to the call are Filipino organizations in Hong Kong, Canada and Australia.

MANILA, Philippines - The number of lowly-paid Filipino workers, mostly women, continues to rise despite economic improvements, the International Labor Organization (ILO) reported yesterday.

According to the ILO, lowly-paid workers increased by 14.5 percent as more women took on low-paying jobs.

FILIPINOS were the third largest immigrant group to acquire US citizenship by naturalization in 2011.

According to the latest report released by the Department of Homeland Security, a total of 42,520 Filipinos were naturalized last year. Mexico and India were the top two countries of birth of new US citizens.

DOHA: There is increasing demand for Filipina maids in Qatar despite the talk of Manila thinking of imposing a ban on sending domestic workers to GCC countries.

Some 4,000 maids have been recruited from the Philippines since the onset of the current year taking their total number to 40,000 from an estimated 36,000 at the end of 2011, according to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) here.

Zest Airways, the airline of juice drink magnate Alfred Yao, has bared plans to fly to the Middle East, which is home to millions of overseas Filipino workers.Documents from the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) showed that the company applied for the authority to mount regular flights to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

MANILA, Philippines - Authorities arrested a Filipina household service worker who allegedly abandoned her newborn baby in the garbage chute of a residential building in Sharja, United Arab Emirates.

According to an online report on Emirates 24/7, the Pinay has been illegally working for a family of 3 after fleeing her original sponsor.
